¿Quién Ganó? : Los premios Grammy

Late Saturday night I was up making some materials for my upcoming CSCTFL / OFLA presentation on making authentic resources comprehensible. I was looking at elpaís.es at the latest news and saw this incredible article that was about the 2023 Grammy Awards. The article itself wasn’t even one that I would adapt a ton because it was filled with cognates and transparent words. However, an idea came to my mind to do something with this on Monday. So, I introduce to you my latest project called ¿Quién ganó? This is a completely free activity!

How to use

¿Quién ganó? means “Who won?” and the idea is that you show your learners the categories and nominations  and they have to guess who won. Chances are, your learners are not up watching the Grammy awards and if they are, it is simply to watch Harry Styles. Also, I can think back to several award shows that I watched and couldn’t tell you who won the next day! Even if they watched and they know all the answers, it is a great way to build community and connection with that student because they will feel extra smart in class LOL!

Here are my plans for usage! You can do what I do, or adapt as you wish.

1. Project the slideshow and read a little about the Grammy awards. I plan to circle the Super 7 verbs that are in the short reading.

2. Show the list of nomination categories to learners and ask them what categories they easily recognize.

3. Begin playing ¿Quién ganó? by showing learners the categories and nominees. Learners should write down their answers for each category. The correct answers will be at the end of the presentation. The learner with the most correct answers wins!

I find that having them write all of their answers down in a game like this and then showing the answers at the end is the most efficient for a 48 minute class period. However, feel free to announce the winner before moving onto another one.

Other variations:

– You can play in teams!

– You can tell them the correct answer before moving onto the next one.

– You can click the editable version and delete categories you do not want to show to kids.

MAterials for playing:

My main source to create presentations is Canva! It is free for Educators and is AMAZING! Below is a link to create a copy of the presentation. Please note that if you make a copy of this before the Grammy Awards on February 5th, 2023…it will not have the answers inside because they have not happened yet.

However, if you want to preview this, make edits for your learners, change the rules, etc…you may! You will need to come back and fill in the winners from my slideshow or look up the answers to add to your slides in the morning.

If you want this to be a 0 prep activity, click the following link for a view-only version! You will not have access to edit and you can just display and play along.

Thank you so much for playing along! I hope to do something with this next year that is a bit more exciting and way less last minute. I also hope to recruit other languages to help me translate this into French, German, Italian, and others who are interested.
